I had the same thing happen to me when I first bought my Savage. It seems that I was overfilling the tank. Once I started the bike, gas would spill over (And out) of the tank. I no longer overfill the tank....no more problems. As far as the range goes...when the tank is filled properly you should avg around 90-100 miles before hitting reserve.
